Steel refractories refractory cement  demand set for further downturn

The global refractories refractory cement industry looks set to fall further in the next five years in line with a muted crude steel industry, delegates at the Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories  heard in Vienna, Austria, last week.
Global refractories refractory cement production has declined each year since 2011, dropping to 36.9Mt in 2014, according to the latest research from Roskill Information Services. China is the largest producer of refractories worldwide, but output has steadily fallen in recent years – dropping from 29.5Mt in 2011 to 24.5Mt in 2014.
One of the main drivers behind falling Chinese refractories refractory cement production has been increased use of higher quality raw materials such as speciality calcined aluminas, high purity dead burned magnesia (DBM) and fused magnesia (FM), to the detriment of clays. Higher quality refractories refractory cement have a longer service life and enable refractory refractory cement users to lower their specific refractories refractory cement consumption per tonne of product.
Increased thrifting of refractories refractory cement– for instance, thinner layers of monolithics and longer times between brick replacement – is also thought to have reduced refractories demand and output in China. These factors were discussed by Jessica Roberts, Senior Analyst at Roskill, who presented on “European refractories refractory cementrecycling – currents trends & prospects”.These trends look set to continue in the period out to 2020 but may also be magnified by falling demand for steel refractories refractory cement in China. Roskill forecasts Chinese crude steel output to decline by -0.4%py to 2020, from 813.3Bnt in 2014 to 796.5Bnt in 2020.Roskill forecasts global refractories refractory cement production to drop to 34.6Mt by 2020, representing a fall of -1.1%py compared to 2014.The iron and steel industry is the largest consumer of refractories refractory cement at 73% in 2014 and hence is the main driver of demand for refractories refractory cement and refractory raw materials, such as calcined alumina, refractory refractory cementmagnesia, graphite and a host of other key raw materials.
