The role of metals in refractory mortar materials

Improved toughness:The metal by crack bridging, crack deflection and crack barrier mechanism to improve the toughness of the composites.
When the cracks extend to the metal material and the substrate material interface, because the ductility of metal particles, crack the stress of the crack will be stretched, the surface stress exerts a bridging,On the one hand, it can prevent the crack opening and reduce the intensity factor of the crack tip, and the plastic deformation occurs with the opening of the crack, which consumes the energy of the crack tip and plays the role of toughening.
Resistance to oxidation:Because of its excellent thermal shock resistance and slag resistance due to the existence of carbon, carbon composite refractory mortar material has the defects of easy oxidation. Once the carbon is oxidized, its advantages will be lost.In order to make full use of the advantages of carbon composite refractories, it is often used to add the appropriate additives to improve its oxidation resistance.The performance of metal O2 and CO and lively, easy reaction has been in refractories used as antioxidant, commonly used antioxidants are al, Si, Mg and the corresponding alloy etc.
In situ reaction to generate non oxide:The metal into refractory mortar material, in the firing process, formation of nonmetallic reinforcing and toughening phase with the gas composition of raw materials or around the reaction, can improve the substrate at room temperature and high temperature performance and thermal shock resistance effect. At present, this technology has been widely concerned.
From above we can know,the metal added to the refractory mortar material, the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of refractory mortar materials have played a positive role.This indicates that they have wide application prospect in refractories.
